Can I publish a photograph of a person without their permission?

Answered By Travis Partrige, Editor

Usually yes, but in some cases you do not need a permission from an individual. If you are taking a picture of a public event, like an election campaign, which involves politicians, and film award, which involves celebrities, you usually do not need a permission to publish their photos if you are publishing their photos for newsworthy purposes.

However, if you are taking a photo of an individual involving their private life, ask their permission before taking their photo and publishing them. You can do this by asking for a photo release form that will state that they will allow you to publish their photos for public use.
